- The longstanding dream of a recreation center in Osceola is slowly starting to form. During an Osceola City Council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 2, the council approved a contract between the city and Hansen-Kitchell for the rec center project. The contract is to perform the first step of creating a needs-assessment study for the future recreation center and potential city hall offices.

- Two city ordinances will be updated in order to comply with the Iowa Code.  Every year, the city of Osceola gets a list of ordinance amendments that are triggered from amendments by the state legislature to the Iowa Code. The city’s laws have to be in compliance with the state, thus the new changes.  This time around, there were two ordinances that had slight amendments made to them – one concerning litter and the other interference with official acts.

- In order to change the length of the Mayor’s term, the public has to submit a valid petition with signatures requesting a special election. City officials received a petition with more than the required number of signatures needed to create a special mayoral election...“I like the fact that it’s on the November election because that’s going to be a very big voter turnout,” Mayor Kedley said. “So, you’ll have the citizens speaking and sincere democracy taking place.”

- Beginning Aug. 23, the first day of school, a new procedure will be in effect: parents and guardians of Clarke middle and high school students will all use the same route for drop-off and pick-up. This change will affect grades seven through 12 and is meant to improve the safety of students and relieve congestion during drop-off of students in the morning and pick-up in the afternoon.
